Hi @scQue814

Thanks for taking the time to share such a detailed experience! I can definitely understand how frustrating it is when what you’re hearing doesn’t line up with the sound you were expecting from the stations you’ve carefully crafted, especially when it interrupts the vibe you were going for.

I took a closer look at your recent play history and do see that Bob Dylan played during your Shuffle session. While there isn’t a specific troubleshooting step I can offer to directly prevent that from happening, I’d like to pass your feedback along to our engineering team for a closer review of your Shuffle experience.

When you have a moment, could you share a bit more detail about your listening habits? This will help provide better context and assist with investigating further:

Which device do you typically use when listening in Shuffle mode (Android, Windows desktop, iOS, etc.)?

Do you usually keep the same set of stations selected for Shuffle, or do you change them frequently?

When something doesn’t fit (like the Bob Dylan track), have you been using thumbs down during Shuffle?

Regarding your experience with your station The Ability to Swing Radio, I understand that the selections haven’t been matching your expectations, which can definitely take away from the experience.

Could you tell me a bit more about what you’ve been hearing on that station?

What are some examples of tracks or artists that didn’t feel like a good fit?

What kind of sound or genre were you hoping the station would lean toward?

Have you had a chance to thumbs up songs that do match what you’re looking for, or thumbs down ones that miss the mark?

In the meantime, I recommend continuing to use your thumbs. This is the best way to help shape your stations and guide Pandora toward the sound you’re looking for.

Appreciate you bringing your experience with Pandora to the community!

I don't know where to post this, as it doesn't seem to fit neatly into any of the categories shown. I use both Android phone and Windows Desktop... as well as iOS desktop, depending on the day. For the past month, the shuffle mode seems to be just completely going off the rails in terms of content. Yes, it's playing the stations I've programmed into the shuffle, but it starts throwing in completely un-related material. Today, for example, while trying to have an immersive Latin music experience with a little jazz and electronica mixed in... suddenly there's Bob Dylan thrown in. I *hate* Bob Dylan. I keep a Bob Dylan station for when my one friend comes over, but I certainly don't play him for myself.

Stations in the mix today when it happened: Senor Coconut; The Ability to Swing (Art of Noise); Nouvelle Vague; Caravan Palace; Lhasa (de Sela); Astor Piazzolla; Buena Vista Social Club. Just those. There were quite a few other derailments during that 6 hour cleaning session, and I can't recall what the others were. But they certainly shared no musical style with what was programmed.

Similarly, I just "collected" the Ability to Swing station (Art of Noise) and the algorithm really seems to have NO IDEA what to play! It only seems to play things that are temporally related (as in they came out within 5 yrs of the band being popular), but not related at all in terms of style. This is rather weird to me.

Any thoughts... or perhaps Pandora changed something in its algorithm where the DNA of the music no longers matters? If so, would completely unravel the reason I use Pandora.

~ scQue814

Today was EVEN WORSE! We have an office computer where we stream while we're doing bookwork. Staff come in and hang out for a bit to recharge.

Today we chose a carefully prepared shuffle of Blue Comets Indonesian surf, Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter" (which has been in my collection for years, and carefully thumb'd and seeded for a particular vibe from that era) Dengue Fever's psychedelic Viet-rock, and a brand-new Credence Clearwater Revival station seeded with tons of Vietnam-era protest songs and the M*A*S*H tv show theme. During the non-stop 3 hours I was in the office, I think 2 CCR songs, 1 Hendricks song, "I Dream of Jeannie" theme... but NOT A SINGLE VIETNAM-era protest song! Additionally, it kept throwing us Nina Simone's mainstream jazz, awkwardly unrelated Miles Davis... Viet-rock, thankfully yes... but NOTHING at all like what I and my manager were attempting to hear!

So many times she said "**ahem** is Pandora DOING???"

Seriously. What is going on with shuffle? It's as if it were programmed to specifically ignore the requested material!
~ scQue814

@scQue814 Thanks for taking the time to share such a detailed breakdown of your experience — I can absolutely understand how frustrating that must feel, especially when you’ve put real care into curating a specific vibe for your office.

I took a closer look at your shuffle session and wanted to walk through what’s going on:

First, I do see that your shuffle is pulling from all four of your selected stations (Blue Comets, Gimme Shelter, Dengue Fever, and CCR). Tracks from each of those artists are showing up consistently, so the shuffle feature itself is working as expected in terms of including your stations.

That said, I completely hear your concern about the type of songs being played within that mix.

Tracks by Nina Simone playing in shuffle:

For example, Nina Simone appearing multiple times is actually tied to one of your station inputs — the track “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke on your Gimme Shelter Radio.

That song can lead Pandora down a broader soul/jazz pathway, which includes artists like Nina Simone. I also noticed that several Nina Simone tracks have been thumbed up on that station, which further reinforces those recommendations.

If that direction isn’t what you’re going for, removing that seed and/or adjusting those Thumbs may help steer the station back toward your intended sound.

Tracks by Miles Davis playing in shuffle:

This has been a little harder to confirm on our end. While I do see tracks by that artist have played sporadically over the past couple of weeks, I am not seeing a direct connection between any added seeds or Thumb ratings on your stations.

If you are willing to work on this further, I recommend tuning into each of the four stations individually rather than on Shuffle. If a track by Miles Davis plays, that can help us confirm which of the stations the tracks by that artist are getting recommended from while you are in shuffle.

Not hearing Vietnam-era protest songs:

As for not hearing Vietnam-era protest songs specifically, I understand that it's frustrating not to hear the song that you've seeded a station with, but there's no way to control when or how often particular songs will play on free Pandora or Pandora Plus, so it's not possible to create a station and hear that track play right away (though it could happen by chance). Because of our licenses, we have to limit the predictability of a certain song or artist from playing on those services. Because of that, even well-seeded stations may not always surface a particular subset of tracks as frequently as expected.

If you’re looking for a more precise, controlled listening experience, especially for something as specific as a Vietnam-era protest mix, Pandora Premium might be a better fit. It allows you to build custom playlists with exactly the songs you want, in the order you want, without relying on station-based recommendations.

Thanks again for your detailed feedback — these adjustments should help bring your shuffle experience much more in line with what you were aiming to hear.
