Stops When Screen Locked or App Backgrounded

akdaniel
Underground

For the past few weeks anytime I use Pandora after a few seconds of a song play it will cut off as if I have press pause and when I go back to the app it opens up as if I'm logging on for the first time.

This happens wither Im on wifi or on mobile data. My phone is an LG Stylo 6 and the version of Pandora I have is version 2007.1

I have restarted my phone cleared the catches and data on the app. I even have uninstalled Pandora and I still have this problem. I even made sure that it it wasn't my battery saver cutting off the app. I did not run into this problem until I upgrade to Pandora premium.

Hi there, @Earl1392. 👋

Thanks for posting about this. To keep everything organized, I moved your post over to this existing thread: Stops When Screen Locked or App Backgrounded

It sounds like you have already tried out these steps and it didn't resolve the issue you're experiencing: Android Troubleshooting

Can you send over a bit more info about your device?

  • Model: Google Pixel 4a 5G
  • Carrier:
  • Android version (Settings > About Phone):
  • Pandora version:
    • If you can open Pandora, go to Profile, then select Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the screen for the version number.
    • If you can't open Pandora: from Android Home screen > Android Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Find Pandora

Are you connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data when this is happening?

Have any error messages popped up? If so, what exactly does it say?

Let me know, and I can report this on your behalf. 🎧

Hello I'm having an issue that's has been happening for over 12 months in Samsung s10 and s21 that music stops after the last playing song finishes when the screen locks or unless the phone is charging.

I have tried all trouble shooting and contacted pandora through email with no help.

I've tried the sleeping apps I've tried power saving settings I've tried the clear cache I've tried everything but it will stop every time when the screen is locked unless the phone is charging.

I love pandora and i prefer it over every other music app even though i have to use a vpn and despite this issue but i would much rather it just continue playing while the screen is locked.

Please can you provide me with a fix for this?

Hey, @Biglerch. 👋

Thanks for posting about your experience. I do see that you were in contact with a member of our User Support team via email back in May 2021. Unfortunately, we do not offer phone support. However, I've noted your request for this option. Also, we do not support the usage of VPNs while using Pandora, but I do understand why you're using one at this time.

Battery Optimization + General Troubleshooting:

When updating the OS on Android devices, the battery optimization on all apps may be automatically turned back on by default. This can cause performance issues or interfere with playback when the app is backgrounded. Due to the sheer volume of Android devices, we are unable to provide step by step instructions for each and every device. I recommend looking up the steps to manage battery optimization for the specific make and model of your device and disable this for the Pandora app.

It sounds like you've already been able to check your Sleeping Apps settings and run through the standard Android troubleshooting steps.

Would you mind sharing your device info so I can pass this along to our engineering team?

Thanks so much for your help with this. 🎧

I have LG Stylo. Over the past few months I have had issue with Pandora playing while using other apps. Each would cause the other to stop working, esp. Google Maps.

Now, Pandora apps completely stops and closes:

1. After it is first selected. Starts song closes after 10-15 seconds.

2. After screen locks. Whether I lock screen or phone does so after it's time frame.

3. When I use any other app or go to home screen.

Phone and app are latest updates versions available.

App has been re installed multiple times.

Followed prompts at troubleshooting to select play in background........there is no option/button to select play in background. I can view data on background usage.

App shuts down if I shut off my screen. I usually get about five seconds of music, then silence. Opens right back up to a new song when I turn the screen on. OnePlus 8, Android 11

Oneplus 8, Verizon, Android 11

The issue doesn't happen if I'm running Pandora through another app (ie
Waze), only if it's standalone

I am having the same issues. I have tried all the pandora and android troubleshooting suggestions and nothing works. I read through all of these posts and it does not appear to offer any legitimate solutions. I don't feel I should have to pay the full cost of my subscription because this has been and continues to be a major and completely unacceptable disruption to the provided services. So I guess my question is has anyone actually figured this out yet or do I need to cancel my subscription? And pretty please do not suggest standard troubleshooting or I might lose my mind.

Hi, @Jinlinsin. 👋

Thanks for your post. Sorry to hear that you're having trouble.

Are you experiencing the lock screen issue, where the buttons are greyed out? If you are experiencing this issue - our engineering team is aware of this. When the fix is released, a moderator will provide more information on this thread: Android: Can't Skip from Lockscreen

Or, are you having trouble with the app stopping when backgrounded even after you've adjusted your sleeping app settings / battery optimization?

I've been having this issue for years.I've read all the forums and looked for answers plus tried every possible setting that could be causing it on my phone. I've contacted support and explained it and told them it's been happening on multiple devices and multiple updates but the best that i could achieve is too receive links to other people's problems.I've tried multiple times and practically begged them for a solution but they just don't have one.I'm in Australia and can only listen to my stations via a VPN and i would pay for premium if the problem was fixed because it's still my favourite music streaming app. It's very disappointing/frustrating that they have not provided a solution because they are definately aware of it.The furthest  back I've seen posted asking for help is 2017Sent from my Galaxy

Hi there, @Biglerch. 👋

Sorry to hear that you've had trouble with this. I completely understand where you're coming from.

VPN Usage:

Unfortunately, using a VPN while trying to stream Pandora is not currently supported. In the meantime, we do have this existing feature request that you can upvote if you'd like to see it implemented: Allow for VPN

Pandora Internationally:

Sadly, we can only legally offer Pandora services to listeners located in the United States at this time. This applies equally to free and paid accounts, as well as Pandora on all computers and supported devices, including offline.

Audio content streaming regulations differ from country to country, and we are still working on acquiring the proper licenses so we can offer Pandora in even more places around the world.
