Android: App Crashes Occasionally

Unique00
Local Performer

The app constantly shuts down randomly and it's annoying. Am I the only one this is happening to? I'm glad I didn't buy the paid version or I would really be pissed. And it don't matter what android phone it is. I have a Motorola and a Samsung and it crashes on both. So aggravated right now.

@Unique00 Could you tell me a bit more about what is happening?

When you say the app shuts down, does it completely crash and you are sent back to your device's home screen?

Also:

  1. Is there an error message? If so, what does it say?
  2. Can you provide me with a screenshot of what you're seeing?

Thanks for working with me on this.

I am experiencing the same thing on 2 different devices. First the music starts to randomly cut out for 1-2 seconds, without the song stopping,  and then after 5 or so of those interruptions, it varies, the music just stops.  I don't get a message about pandora thinking I'm not still listening, but when I click on the drop down with the song, it goes through the whole reboot of the app, and obviously skips to the next song. Happens like every 30 minutes to me. Pain in my butt

Hi @C-mcnairy 👋 Welcome to the Community and thanks for posting!

Sorry to hear that your playback stops when playing Pandora, this may be happening because of your battery optimization settings.

When updating the OS on Android devices, the battery optimization on all apps may be automatically turned back on by default.

This can cause performance issues or interfere with playback when the app is backgrounded. Due to the sheer volume of Android devices, we are unable to provide step by step instructions for each and every device. I recommend looking up the steps to manage battery optimization for the specific make and model of your device and disable this for the Pandora app.

You can also find more info about the battery optimization in this helpful article

However, if you have a Samsung device, this issue may be related to your "sleeping app" settings. Please check out this post regarding the settings for sleeping apps here.

Let me know how it goes! 🎧

You need to check to see what is using up your memory on your devices first. Also make sure you have the latest version. When I have this issue with any app on my phone I check memory usage first

Hi there, @greenmt05. 👋

Thanks for posting about your experience with the Pandora app.

Would you mind sharing a few more details about what's happening when the app shuts down randomly?

  • Do any error messages pop up? If so, what exactly does it say?
  • Does this happen the Pandora app is backgrounded or when your screen is locked?
  • Also, does the app shut down/crash? Or, does the music stop but load again when you open the app?

Let me know. 🎧

It just shuts off..app closes..and sometimes within the first couple of hours I'm listening. I'm paying for it it should stay on. Sent from my T-Mobile 5G Device

@greenmt05

Let's check on the battery optimization settings for your phone. Occasionally, these settings can be turned back on by default. This can cause performance issues or interfere with playback when the app is locked or backgrounded.

  • Open your device Settings and then Apps.
  • Scroll to find Pandora or use Search in the upper right hand corner.
  • Select Battery
  • Next select Unrestricted.

Keep in mind, due to the numerous models of Android devices, we are unable to provide step by step instructions for every device. If the above steps do not apply, then we recommend looking up the specific steps for your make and model.

If you continue to have trouble after these steps, I'm happy to pass this along to our engineering team for further investigation. Please provide the following details about your device:

  • Make and model
  • Android OS:
  • Pandora version:

Thank you!

There is no error message, the app just shuts down completely. I have a Motorola 5G Stylus.

@Unique00 Sorry to hear about the trouble.

Could you explain what's happening in more detail? The more information you can provide, the better I can help.

When this issue occurs:

  • Is the app still open in the background where you're able to press play and resume music or do you need to close and relaunch the app to continue listening?
  • Are you listening to a station, album, playlist, or podcast?
  • Are you connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data?
    •  If using Wi-Fi, are you able to recover the listening session by toggling Wi-Fi off?
  • Are you using a Bluetooth connection?

Additionally, please provide your device model, Android OS, One UI (if on Samsung), and Pandora app versions:

  • Model: Motorola 5G Stylus
  • Android version (Settings > About Phone > Android version):
  • One UI version: (Settings > About Phone > Software information):
  • Pandora version (Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Find Pandora):

Thanks for working with me on this.

These symptoms resumed after the last Android update.  The logs contain nothing.

@oradnap I'd be happy to help with any questions you have, but I will need additional information to do so.

Can you explain your issue a bit further?

  1. Is there an error message? If so, what does it say?
  2. Can you provide me with a screenshot of what you're seeing?

The more details you're able to provide, the better equipped I'll be to help.

I look forward to hearing back.

Thank you for the rapid reply, <@AdamPandora>.  That's pretty awesome!

1.  When I open the application it flashes the channel list, then, on trying to load the last playing channel, it closes.

2.  If I create a channel, then delete it, thereby removing a currently playing channel, it stays open on the channel selection screen.  If I then select a channel, e.g. "British Comedy" or something, the application closes.

3.  I am using a stock Fairphone 4.  It is neither modified nor rooted in any way.  I have the latest Android 14 update.

4.  Possibly unrelated:  it previously closed if I disconnected Bluetooth, then made a volume adjustment.

5.  Logcat shows nothing related to Pandora, strangely.  But maybe it just doesn't have access to that log stream.

@oradnap Thanks for following up.

When you say it closes, does the app completely exit and you are brought back to your phone's home screen?

In the meantime, I've enabled a trace on your account to help us better understand what's happening.

For this trace to be useful, we'll need you to run through our troubleshooting steps: Troubleshooting for Android Devices

Let me know if you continue to run into issues with this.

@AdamPandora

1.  Yes, the application exits on attempted playback.

2.  I followed the Android troubleshooting steps and even tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling.

Screen shot 1 is what I see when Pandora exits after trying to play media.

Screen shot 2 is evidence of the currency of my update status.

For this trace to be useful, we'll need you to run through our troubleshooting steps once more: Troubleshooting for Android Devices

If the app crashes and the error message appears again after running through the steps linked above, can you please let me know the date/time it occurred?

Thanks again for working with me on this.

@ctech1 I definitely understand your frustration.

I'd be happy to further assist, however I'll need to gather some additional information from you so that I can better understand what is happening in your situation.

When this issue occurs:

  • Is the app still open in the background where you're able to press play and resume music or do you need to close and relaunch the app to continue listening?
  • Is there an error message? If so, what does it say?
  • Are you listening to a station, album, playlist, or podcast?

When this issue occurs:

Is the app still open in the background where you're able to press play and
Resume music or do you need to close and relaunch the app to continue
Listening?

App is still open but crashes and relaunches to a new song when I goto it.
The play button in the quick settings is unresponsive.

Is there an error message?

No sir

If so, what does it say? Are you listening to a station, album, playlist,
Or podcast?

Usually a station but happens with all

Are you connected to wi-fi or cellular data?

Again happens under bith circumstances, full bars, no packet loss, multiple
Locations and networks

If using wi-fi, are you able to recover the listening session by toggling
Wi-fi off?

I will test and report here today as a reply only if yes

Are you using a bluetooth connection?

No

Thanks for working with me on this.
