I thought it would be fun this month to test out Pandora’s human-powered Music Analysis by diving into our collected data to find some popular songs that have unusual meters.

Most commercial popular music is in 4/4 time, which is just the fancy way of saying each bar has 4 beats. The songs that aren’t built around 4 beat patterns are generally built around 3 beat patterns. That’s pretty much it for the overwhelming majority of what you’ll ever hear on the radio.

I love Nashville. At this point, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve made the pilgrimage to Music City, but you never forget your first time. For me, that maiden voyage went down in the early 2000s. As if standing in the wings of the Opry wasn't enough to blow a rookie editor's mind, he threw down the ultimate ace. Right there in the flesh, he introduced me to the legendary, rhinestone-clad icon himself, Porter Wagoner.
