@aaiello0624 What is the name of the station you are having trouble adding variety to?
today's hits, 2000s hip hop, and today's country
@aaiello0624 It sounds like you are trying to edit one of your genre stations.
Genre stations, such as "Today's Hits" or "2000s hip hop," are stations curated by Pandora, and they behave a little bit differently than your own personalized stations. One difference is that you cannot Add Variety to these stations.
That's because Adding Variety could change your listening experience on these stations; added seeds would most likely inspire music outside of the scope of the intended genre.
That said, when listening from a computer or mobile device, you can access Pandora Modes to customize your station experience. You can pick different modes like Crowd Faves, Discovery and Deep Cuts.
For more infomation on Pandora Modes, you can view this page.

thank you!!
I'm experiencing the exact same thing. I'm trying to fix my Yacht Rock station. How can I tell if it's a genre or a station? I hate to start from the beginning and create my own, as a good portion of the songs reflect the yacht rock that's played every summer on SiriusXM. But some of the stuff seriously does not belong. And where the heck is all the Steely Dan?!?!
@mathgirl78 Yacht Rock Radio is also a genre station.
There isn't a visible indication of whether or not a station is a genre station (other than the edit button being greyed out in your station details). However, it is safe to assume that if the station you create isn't based off of a specific artist/band or song, but rather a specific genre (Ex: 2000s hip hop or Yacht Rock), then it is likely a genre station.
Hope we continue to see you around the community!
I am having the same problem with a station that I created. My station is called Classical Christmas Radio, and is was created from the genre station Classicsl Christmas. I am a Plus member so I should be able to customize it.
Hi @mldurgin thanks for posting to community.
As @AdamPandora mentioned in his post above, Genre Stations, such as Classical Christmas Radio, are curated by Pandora and behave a little differently. Adding variety could change your listening experience on these stations; added seeds would most likely inspire music outside of the scope of the intended genre. As a result, you won't be able to edit genre station regardless of your subscription.
Thanks again for being part of community!
I have the same issue. They are stations that I've had for awhile.
Thanks for posting @DJTall - can you let know the station names? I'll take a closer look.
here is one where I cannot: 2058777364978158115
I do see now that some of my other, older stations still allow adding variety, so it must be the station type
here is one where I can: 617517405662562851
@DJTall I moved your post over to this thread since you are running into a similar issue.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to add variety to you Summer Hits of the 90s Radio station, as that is a genre station.
Check out the accepted solution to this thread for a complete explanation around this.
Hope this helps explain!
I'm a longtime Pandora supporter/subscriber (created my first station in 2007, A Cappella Radio-- note-- that station does not have this problem?), and am having the same problem. For example, I created my Bluegrass & Mountain station in 2011:
https://www.pandora.com/station/520144325120810550
The "edit" button is grayed out, so I can't fix the typo/s in the "Comments" box.
There are four sources listed as "created from-- while moving the cursor over each row, it highlights, but there's nothing to click on and no "Delete" button-- if that's a factor in why there's no "Add Variety" option; there's a Thumb History. There is no plus sign or Add Variety link.
I've browsed through others of my older stations, and I'm not seeing any that have this same problem.
I'm sending this message (and having this problem) using the Google Chrome browser on a PC laptop. (I have also tested it on a Macbook with Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari.)
@LilyRowan I moved your post to this thread since it sounds like you are running into a similar issue.
It looks like your Bluegrass & Mountain station is actually our Bluegrass genre station that you re-named.
While there was once a bug that allowed users to to edit their genre stations (ex: add additional artist/song seeds or editing the station name), that bug has since been resolved.
At this point, it is no longer possible to edit the name of these stations, or to add variety.
For more information, check out the accepted solution to this thread.
Hope this helps explain!
So if I now have to create a brand-new station to curate my own seeds & thumbs-up/thumbs down, is there no way to port in all that information to a new station? I farmed my Bluegrass/Mountain station out from another station ("Create a New Station From" back in the day) so I could move things that I didn't want in one station to their own, better-fit place.
@LilyRowan Unfortunately, there is not a way to transfer your thumb ratings from one station to another.
If you'd like to see something like that added to Pandora, I recommend creating a feature request for your suggestion here.
"Adding Variety could change your listening experience" is exactly what we're trying to do.
I started a variety station from "House Radio" but it has become repetitive and I'd like to expand the influence of artists and songs (like a custom station). I have personalized this "genre station" via likes and dislikes (dozens of them) over several months/years and starting a whole new personalized station to start over would be very inconvenient.
Is there any intention to allow us to personalize a station from a genre station?
Maybe allowing us to change the title like"Genre Radio" to "User's Genre Radio" could make it a personalized station and therefor editable. For example: House Radio > Devin's House Radio | Country Radio > Lili's Country Radio...
@sddevin Thanks for your feedback around this.
I do see you also created a feature request for your suggestion: Duplicate Genre Station allowing it to be editable as Personalized Stations are.
This will give others around the community a chance to upvote your idea if they are looking for a similar feature as well.
In the meantime, we recommend creating your own station, using an artist or song that you think best represents a particular genre. Then use Thumbs to help guide the station you are trying to create.
Although I understand the hesitation to start all over again with a new station, you may Add Variety to the station you create, in order to include other artists or songs you'd like to influence your station.
Keep in mind, each seed you add will inspire hundreds of other songs, so a little variety goes a long way. If you don't like the direction your station is headed, you can always edit your station seeds and Thumbs through the Station Details.
That said, when you're listening from a computer or mobile device you can access Pandora Modes to customize your station experience. You can pick different modes like Crowd Faves, Discovery and Deep Cuts.
Hope this helps!
me too!!!!
