Once upon a time, if you clicked on "Why This Song?", it would list some specific traits of the current song that fit with other songs or artists that you've liked, and you could get a sense of the internal logic behind the algorithm. Sometimes it was interesting to see what traits were highlighted, sometimes it was nice just to see that there was more going on than "people who like Band X often like Band Y as well" or other superficial connections like that. So why does Pandora not do that anymore? Why is the only answer I ever get when I click on that button this generic "specific musical qualities" garbage?

I completely understand where you're coming from. The "Why This Song?" feature is designed to give listeners a bit more insight into why a particular track is playing on their station. However, that detailed musical analysis isn't available for every song in our catalog.
