Android: Drains Battery When App Not in Use

Cdog02mustgt

I am noticing that even when I have Pandora stopped and cleared (not used) it is still running and using up battery. Only way to fix it is to apply a force stop to it. Anyway to get this to stop?

So, is there a legit fix yet? All I see are basically the same posts. And responses over and over again. No way I'm going to go in and force stop the app every single time. At that point, I will just delete the app honestly.

Hello. Details on my phone.VerizonSamsung Galaxy S9+Hardware: REV1.1Pandora 2112.1I do use Android Auto as well. Which is something new to me. But, I havnt used that for over a week. That would be the only thing "new" that I have done differently. Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

Thanks so much for sending over those details, @GRislove2.

Looks like you're on Pandora App version 2112.1. The most current version is 2201.1.

I would recommend updating to the newest version to see if that helps with the battery drain:

  1. Tap your profile avatar in the top right corner.
  2. Select Manage apps & device.
  3. Then tap Manage and scroll to Pandora for updates.

Tip: In some cases, you may need to restart your device to update an app.

In the meantime, I can share this with our engineering team on your behalf. 🎧

I have experienced this across at least 2 phones (prior to that I was too unaware to notice or act on such things) and various versions of Android and Pandora.

This string is nearly 3 years old, and you can find many more online. It seems as though Pandora is either not dealing with this, has some surreptitious reason for not fixing it, or just doesn't have the tech to solve it. The discouraging thing is that moderation here will continue to ask people to do the same thing that clearly isn't effective, as this is not a user generated problem. And in any case, after years of this not being fixed, having users force stop after each use is not a reasonable work-around.

While you are probably not in a position to know this, or if you did know, not reveal it, it would be really minimally big of Pandora to just be honest about what is going on. Don't you think?

@Ru2 I definitely understand your frustration.

I've enabled a trace on your account to help us better understand what's happening.

For this trace to be useful, we'll need you to run through our troubleshooting steps: Troubleshooting for Android Devices

If you continue to experience issues, can you send over a bit more info about your device?

  • Model:
  • Carrier:
  • Android version (Settings > About Phone):
  • Build number (Settings > About Phone):
  • Android Security Patch Level, if noted on your device (Settings > About Phone):
  • Pandora version:
    • If you can open Pandora, go to Profile, then select Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the screen for the version number.
    • If you can't open Pandora: from Android Home screen > Android Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Find Pandora

Are you connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data when this is happening?

Have you identified any other patterns or notable information?

Thanks for working with me on this. 🤝

I appreciate your response and concern, however what you are offering seems to miss the point of what I shared. I wasn't asking for tech support. If you look again at my message, my only interest is that Pandora find a fix. Trying to do this sort of tech support is a rabbit hole I'm not able to go down at this point in my years of doing tech support.
In any case, I don't know what a "trace" is on my account, but please disable it. I clearly not asking for tech support, after years of being on both ends of it, my message one a 'one off', not a request to open up a process.
Reading over your email --which is strangely missing from this reply email-- you ask if I am able to open Pandora? This would indicate either an automated email or some generic response. There is however one thing that might be useful for Pandora to trouble-shoot its long-standing problem with Android: I only use Pandora in my car, through Android Auto. One recent change, apparently with an update to Android Auto (or maybe to Android 12) is that when I leave my car Pandora is not visible in the "app switcher", thus is not dismissible.
In the past I used "restricted background activity" in the Android settings for Pandora, which made no difference, so I reverted to the default setting. But yesterday I went back to that setting, and for now that seems to have fixed things, though I'll have to wait and see after another use or two of Pandora in my car, which I'll repeat, is the only time I use Pandora.
And while I'm not sure if this will make a difference for whatever follow-up Pandora will do internally, in my car Pandora is run on data, and at home, where it continues to invisibly run in the foreground, I'm on wifi. It would be interesting, for all the reports on this issue for years, to see if it is only an Android one.

I agree that this does seem related to android auto. I shut down pandora when I go to bed. When I drive to work I plug the phone into my car and android auto starts up. I'm going to guess it silently opens pandora and never closes it. I havent used pandora since yesterday but it has used 30% of my battery with 7 hours of active use.

I've got a guaranteed fix for this issue which I noticed today on my phone (17% battery usage while not in use). Uninstall Pandora from smart phone, delete Pandora account, and never use Pandora ever again. 👍🏻👍🏻

More than a classic "nuclear" fix, we need a name for this one. I got it, the "super nova" fix!

I ended having to uninstall Pandora on my phone as a result of this as well! @Ru2, did you ever find a solution besides uninstalling the app?

Oddly the behavior is not consistent. I suspect that somewhere between updates to both Android and Pandora app going in and out of sync this problem comes and goes. For now it is gone yay!

Hmmm, interesting - I will re-install it to see if removing it and installing it again might get rid of whatever bug caused the issue, haha!
