"Bitter Sweet Symphony" is a song by English alternative rock band The Verve. It is the lead track on their third studio album, Urban Hymns (1997). May 20, 2014 · Pistols also juggles time signatures and quiet-loud dynamics while the last of the additions, Good Vibrations (not the Beach Boys classic), is built around a drone with Wenøe’s delivery all witchy and conspiratorial as she sings about “growing in your arms” and being “the honey in your skin”.

My GSOTD for today is going to be only one song. That one song was written based on true events that happened in World War 1. I will share the story word for word as it was written by the Great Grandson who wrote the song, as well as the story. This song has been in movie films, and played by some of the most famous Bagpipers, as well as well known Celtic music artists.

I do hope all who read this will give the song a listen to.

"The Story Of SGT. MacKenzie"

Charles Stuart MacKenzie was a sergeant in the Seaforth Highlanders. He went to fight in France during World War One and was shot in the shoulder, the military sent him home to Scotland for treatment, where the surgeon wanted to amputate his arm. He immediately refused, stating that he had to get back to his men. During his time in the hospital he was asked what was it like to kill "the hun" (as the Germans were called then). He replied what a waste of a fine body of men. On the steps of the hospital, the last picture of him was taken in his uniform. This picture hung in his home above the fireplace. On his return to battle, he and his men were engaged in fixed bayonet combat. To the best of my knowledge, and taken from reports of the returning soldiers, one of his close friends fell, badly wounded. Charles stood his ground and fought until his was overcome and died from bayonet wounds. On that day, my Great Grandmother and my Grandmother were sitting at the fireplace when the picture of my Great Grandfather fell from the wall. My Great Grandmother looked, and said to my Grandmother "oh, my Bonnie, Charles is dead." Sure enough a few days passed, then the local policeman brought the news that SGT. Charles Stuart MacKenzie had been killed in action.            This same picture now hangs above my fireplace. A few years back my wife Christine died of cancer, and in my grief I looked at his picture to ask what gave him the strength to go on. It was then, in my mind, that I saw him lying on the field and wondered what was his final thoughts were. It was then, the words and music just appeared in my head. I believe the men and women like yourself who are prepared to stand their ground for their family, their friends, and for their country; deserve to be remembered, respected, and honored. SGT MacKenzie, is my very small tribute to them. The rest as they say is history!

Joe Kilna MacKenzie Great Grandson of Charles Stuart MacKenzie.

Enjoy my GSOTD choice:

A Lament: Final Battle/SGT MacKenzie by Joseph Kilna MacKenzie.  https://pandora.app.link/fg6icwsUYab

P.S This is not the original version. Pandora does not have it to offer. The original version is the best by far.  I found these lyrics on-line. They are the original as well as the translated English version.

Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone

When they come I will stand my ground
Stand my ground Ill not be afraid

Thoughts of home take away my fear
Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears

Once a year say a prayer for me
Close your eyes and remember me

Never more shall I see the sun
For I fell to a Germans gun
