Celtic Music: Kecharitomene by Loreena McKennitt. https://pandora.app.link/SIJ3282vebb
There is an instrumental called "Kecharitomene" and this piece of music was inspired primarily from three different directions. One of the inspirations harkens back to a book by a woman called Susan Whitfield. The book was called Life Along the Silk Road and it's a wonderful profiling of different kinds of people who travelled up and down the Silk Road, whether they were soldiers, whether they were monks, whether they were merchants. And it gives a very intimate taste of what their experience was and the different cultural expressions and permutations there was along the Silk Road at that time, how those cultural permutations expressed themselves in food or in music or in religion, even animal husbandry. And again, I'm always fascinated to look at places or roads or circumstances where cultures come together and influence each other.

“I wrote Rescue with a loved one in mind so this makes that one of the most personal songs I’ve ever been a part of. I remember getting this vision about a girl who was caught in a really desperate situation. She was running to all of these vices in order to find just an element of hope or just something to keep her in the process of this desperation. And in came walking down the hall Jesus. And instead of judging her for maybe some of the actions she had chosen that were really painful and difficult, He sat with her in the midst of it all. He didn’t try to fix her, He just was with her.” – Lauren Daigle

Rock: The Maker by Daniel Lanois. https://pandora.app.link/tOPzoqGWnbb
Rolling Stone called Daniel Lanois “the most important record producer to emerge in the '80s” for his work with U2(The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree), Peter Gabriel (So), and Bob Dylan (Oh Mercy). Each of those albums expressed spirituality more explicitly than the artists had previously. No wonder, then, that beginning in 1989 Lanois’ own musical expressions became more spiritual. Known earlier for ambient work with Brian Eno, he has since become known for a song he wrote that year, “The Maker.” In the same vein as “Amazing Grace,” Lanois’ “Maker” draws smooth lyrics across a simple but powerful musical base. The singer laments having erred into darkness, and pauses to sigh at his choosing to be saved. The song’s smooth spirituality has fooled some to think it is an old hymnal. But even though not penned until 1989, “The Maker” has already become a classic, covered often by Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Garcia Band, and the Dave Matthews Band. Lanois himself re-released it as part of his sound-track to the 1996 movie Sling Blade– and, a year later, recorded “Amazing Grace” for a compilation by the same name.

Rock: Born In The U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. https://pandora.app.link/2AWtR0jfwbb “Born in the USA.” This song was written in 1981 and recorded in 1982 as the first song on Springsteen’s Born in the USA Album. Upon its release, the song quickly became a hit, and individuals around the country viewed it as a pro-American theme song. Many conservative politicians latched onto the song’s chorus, and Pres. Ronald Reagan even recognized Springsteen’s values during a reelection campaign speech. However, the song was not a pro-American statement. Instead, Bruce Springsteen wrote “Born in the USA” as a protest to the hostility and indifference that many Vietnam veterans faced when they returned to the country. The lyrics of the song’s chorus were written in irony. The song tells the story of a working-class individual who was drafted into the armed forces and exposed to numerous hardships after returning to the United States following a tour in Vietnam. This story contrasts the upbeat tune of the song and makes the ironic nature of “Born in the USA” even more impactful.

The music and the voice and performance of Bette Midler. What a thrill it is to see an artist like Bette Midler perform to such an extreme and lofty level. What a dazzling radiant star that burned so brightly for so short a time and then was so suddenly and prematurely snuffed out. But when an artist gives so much of herself in every song she sings, it is no wonder that her life was slowly drained and eventually terminated by the fans who loved her. Pop: 2 Become 1 by Jewel. https://pandora.app.link/K8668VSiEbb
2 BECOME 1 is a nice melancholic song, but, shocking enough, I agree it wasn't the best choice as a third single, sure it was close to the old sounding Jewel, but if 0304 was praised about something it was Jewel's boldness to don't be afraid and try something new.

Hard Rock: Roll With The Changes by REO Speedwagon. https://pandora.app.link/viI5cKHoGbb
Cronin: I actually wrote that song as I was traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles, when I rejoined the band; I left the band for a couple years. When I rejoined, the band had moved from Champaign, Illinois to Los Angeles. I didn’t really picture myself as a Los Angeles person, I’m a Midwest boy. So when I came to Los Angeles I really wanted to feel the journey. I didn’t just want to jump on an airplane—it was too big of a move for me. So I wanted to drive. “Roll With The Changes” was personally about me moving from Chicago to L.A.—I was quite literally rolling with the changes. I had just stopped at a truck stop in New Mexico—I had a brown paper bag that was sitting on the seat next to me, when the thoughts of the lyrics started coming to me. I was writing [the words] on this brown paper bag as I was rolling down the road. So I was quite literally and figuratively rolling with the changes (laughs).
