Google Home: Casting results in error ""Your session with device has ended"

From Android app, casting to Google speakers rarely works any longer.  Very frustrating, as it's the only way to reliably get a curated station to play on the Google speakers.

I've updated apps, rebooted everything, even signed out of Pandora on my phone and back in.

What gives?
