Pixel: Battery drains when not using app

LuckyShoT

Same problem.  I took my phone of my charger (100% charge) and 2h 40 minutes later my battery is at 50% on my Pixel 10 Pro (I was connected to Wifi at home the entire time).  Pandora used 64% of that according to the battery usage screen in settings, and that was all background usage because I didn't use the app at all.  I had to revoke the permission to run in the background but then Pandora loses the ability to stream music in my car if my phone screen turns off.  Uninstalling this and moving to Spotify since you clearly can't prioritize resolving this issue after knowing about it for 1 year.  This type of battery consumption in the background is absolutely unnecessary.

Pandora Update 03/31/26:

Hi, everyone! 👋

Thank you to all who have taken the time to share your experience.

What you’re seeing can happen on newer Pixel devices due to how Android manages apps in the background. Even when an app isn’t actively in use (and even after a force stop), the system may occasionally allow the app to restart or run briefly in the background as part of normal system management. This can sometimes make it appear as if the app is running more than expected.

Pixel’s Adaptive Battery feature will continue to learn your usage patterns and further limit background activity over time. That said, if you’d like to minimize this further, you can try:

  • Restarting your device (this clears any lingering background processes)
  • Going to Settings > Apps > Pandora > Battery and setting it to Restricted (this may impact background playback or streaming performance)

If you continue to see higher battery usage over the next few days (for example, consistently at the top of your battery list with much higher percentages), please reply to this thread and we can take a closer look.

This has been going on for more that a year.  More like 8 years.  I compensated for it on my last Pixel (6a) by routinely checking the Quick Settings pull down for Active Apps after I was done streaming and stopping it there.  However on my new Pixel 10a Pandora is not showing up there even when draining my battery in the background, and now it is actually draining the battery even after a forced stop.  I will uninstall if this can't be solved
