Every creator has their own approach. Whatโs the first thing you build around when starting something new? ๐ถ๐ค๐ง๐ก
For me it's almost always a melody or riff that I build everything else around - I'm amazed that some artists can, for example, first create a beat as their foundation to construct a song. That would almost never work for me - but as was pointed out, everyone is different in their process.
Love that open-minded approach! Inspiration really is everywhere if weโre paying attention, @TOOLIE634.
Solid way to build a song, @NowPlaying_JDM. Melody and riffs can carry so much emotion and direction. Itโs really cool how different everyone's process can be.
I totally relate to this, @thadfiscella. Some of my strongest musical ideas have stemmed from me not thinking about music at all, but letting my mind wandering while going on a walk/hike in nature. Something about being outdoors just unlocks something!
Super interesting hearing everyone's perspectives so far!
@ChrisPandora @thadfiscella @NowPlaying_JDM @TOOLIE634 Would you say your creative process has changed a lot throughout the years? Or did you find one thing that worked, and stuck with it?
@AdamPandora it's a good question, and I agree with others in that you have to be open to deriving creative ideas from different environments and life experiences. For me though I've learned that I can't wait around for inspiration to hit me in the face. It's putting in the studio time and getting into a state of deep focus for at least 30 minutes to an hour with minimal distractions. It doesn't always yield amazing results every session but it reinforces habits and skills that allow me to capitalize on good ideas when they do materialize.
@NowPlaying_JDM - I know what you mean! I often work on music regularly just to practice song writing and production with the mindset that not every idea is going to be a 'keeper'. I look at it as getting my reps in, like how people go to the gym regularly to stay in shape rather then going in once every few months, overdoing it and then hurting/overwhelming themselves lol

I usually start with lyrics, but record them last.

@Maxywaxywell whoa! do you have scratch vocals or anything to reference as your write the rest of the song? or do you fit them in once everything else with written?
I usually start each song with a different scratch layer, not always vocals!
