iOS: Playback stops when using other apps

My pandora stops when I use other apps. This didn't used to happen and is now happening on my iPhone and iPads. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Pandora, and it didn't fix the problem. And also it randomly pauses...thoughts? Any solutions?

@Kk123 To clarify, are you only experiencing this issue with Pandora?

What are some examples of apps you are unable to use at the same time as Pandora?

Have you tried streaming other apps such as YouTube?

If not, please try launching the YouTube app and let me know if you experience similar issues there as well.

I am now having the exact same issue and I’ve been using Pandora for many years. Music no longer plays in the background. Unless the app is open, the music stops playing. It seems this has been an issue for six years now, there must be some fix for this. It happens when I’m using my earbuds, when it’s plugged into the car, when it’s connected to a portable speaker… in all cases.

Hi Maria, thanks for reaching out. I’ve done the steps in the article and it still happens, I’m sure you’ll see if you’ve put a trace on my account. It just quits. This happens even when I’m simply listening to music and not using any other app. The music will only continue playing if the app is open.

Could you explain what's happening in more detail?

When this issue occurs: 

  • Are you're able to press play and resume music or do you need to close and relaunch the app to continue listening?
  • To confirm, are you connected to cellular data? Or does it happens with Wi-Fi too?


Additionally, please provide both your iOS and Pandora app versions:

  • iOS version: (Settings > General > About > Version)
  • Pandora version: (Pandora > Profile tab > Settings gear & scroll to the bottom of the screen)
