Good Friday afternoon, I have some free time, so let's dive into This Day In The History Of Music. Enjoy the facts and the read. 1.) On this day in 1960, 16-year-old Brian Hyland went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini'; it made No.8 in the UK. Also a UK No.1 for Bombalurina featuring TV presenter Timmy Mallett in 1990. 2.) On this day in 1960, Decca Records scrapped 25,000 copies of Ray Peterson's 'Tell Laura I Love Her' because they felt the song, which recounts the last thoughts of a teenager dying from a car accident, was "too tasteless and vulgar". A cover version by Ricky Valance went to No.1 on the UK chart a month later. 3.) On this day in 1963, The Kingsmen released "Louie, Louie." Some radio stations ban it due to rumors of obscene content. The "Louie Louie" song controversy centers around the scrutiny and censorship the song faced, particularly after the Kingsmen's rendition became popular in 1963. Originally written and recorded by Richard Berry, the song was targeted by school officials and various censoring agencies, including the FBI, due to widespread rumors that its lyrics contained obscene references when played at slower speeds. Despite an investigation by the Federal Communications Commission determining that the lyrics were indecipherable and thus not obscene, the public's perception of the song as inappropriate contributed to its growing cult status. The controversy escalated when the Kingsmen's version was banned from Boston radio stations later that same year. The song's notoriety was further solidified when it was featured in the 1978 film "National Lampoon's Animal House." Over the years, "Louie Louie" has been covered by numerous artists, some of whom introduced entirely new lyrics, diverging from the original content. This blend of censorship, cultural interpretation, and musical legacy continues to intrigue music historians and fans alike. 4.) On this day in 1963, The Searchers were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Sweets For My Sweet', the group's first of three UK No.1's. The group’s reputation had only grown over their minimal years on the touring circuit. Still, they were setting foot on the continent as a group for the first time, and the audience made sure nobody would ever forget it. 6.) Just weeks after he finished recording what would become his breakthrough album, Hank Jr. decided to hike Ajax Peak in western Montana with local rancher **ahem** Willey and Willey’s 11-year-old son Walt. While navigating the rugged and snowy terrain at roughly 9,000 feet, Williams slipped on a snow field. The then-26-year-old Williams plummeted more than 500 feet, hitting jutting rocks along the way. **ahem** and Walt Willey made their way to Williams, who was lying motionless and bleeding. They were surprised to find him alive and conscious, but knew he had suffered severe injuries. When the Willey’s reached Hank, they saw that his head had been fractured, exposing part of his brain, his nose had nearly been torn from his face, and one of his eyes had been detached from the socket… and these were only the visible injuries. **ahem** ordered his son to stay with Hank while he went for help. For roughly three hours, young Walt talked to Hank nonstop to keep him awake as he made his way to a ranger station to call for help. It took six hours, six men, and a helicopter to transport Hank to the hospital in Missoula, Montana, where he underwent more than seven hours of surgery as doctors frantically worked to save his life. Hank’s outlook was bleak, and doctors didn’t expect him to survive. “When I fell, there were only two people I saw when I woke up in the hospital bed, and that was Johnny and June,” Williams told Rolling Stone in 2015. “June put a cross on me and told me it was all going to be OK.” It was nine days before Hank was willing to look at himself in the mirror. He later said that his head had swollen to the size of a watermelon and his face and jaws were wired and sewn together. “I knew it was bad, but I didn’t know it was that bad,” Hank said. Two weeks after the fall, he was moved out of the ICU and into a private room where he stayed until August 25, when he was released from the hospital. “I’ve had dreams about it,” Williams said in a 1989 interview. “I should have died. The doctor said he had worked on plenty of boys in Vietnam and, to be frank, they looked good compared to me.” 8.)
